The ISLAND EXPERIMENTAL 6: Live @ The Tabernacle

by Wills Morgan

The date: FRIDAY, JUNE 11. Start time: Seven in the evening. Official end: Midnight. Whatever you do, don’t arrive late. It’s the same price whatever time you come, and you will see and hear more good stuff if you COME EARLY.

Where are we going? To the Heart of Notting Hill Gate... we are going to POP UP AT THE TABERNACLE. We come one...we came all...WE COME TOGETHER...at one of London’s most prestigious musical venues.

The Tabernacle is well steeped in musical heritage. This year alone they've booked Robert Plant, Lily Allen and Corinne Bailey Rae to grace their stage. This is the place where CELEBRITIES and STARS turn up in their reasonably-priced bras...and I have to tell you...that’s just the men.

And turning up next is a stunning sample of live music from the best open mike night in the whole of this blessed city...that my friends is...THE ISLAND EXPERIMENT.

The gang you know and love (they are the people I’ve written about in that net magazine...what? Haven’t you read it? Tut tut!) will be there in force. Many of them will indeed arrive early, just so they can SPREAD THE VIBE.
This is what’s coming at ‘cha ON THE NIGHT itself. And friends...you can’t say that I didn’t try to tell you beforehand. I’ve got my own column now! As long as the editor okays it, I think we’re fine. Onwards!

7.00 ALASTAIR D. We open it all up with the tall young Cat in the Hat, with his latest band in tow. Rocking you straight down the middle...no mistake. All together now: naaa, naaa, nah....na na n-n-n-naaaaaah.

7.20 WIGS AND ANTROBUS A pair of rock ‘n’ roll legends, these two. If you can’t catch them doing their thing in the early part of the evening, they are sure to be part of the ALL-STAR JAM later on. Something in my Blood tells me the boys will be Wonderful on the night. But go see them early anyway. It’ll be good.

7.40 BEN THOMAS BROWN Ben will be sure to bring his drum kit...as well as his geetoohr, a couple of chicken shakers and a few other toys for the evening’s merriment. Oh yes, he will sing some of his own stuff, which is rather good. I like his “Guns of Job”. Ben boogies along as he plays this tune and it’s a very entertaining watch.

it's 80 O'CLOCK. must be time for CUTHBERT 80 then.80.00 CUTHBERT 80 He sings it real baaaad. He sings it Black. He’s got the Hair. And when he’s on the mike, he’s Bad, Black. Hair, and everywhere. Get here for 80 o’clock: give respect to the 80.

8.20 KARIN FRANSSON The first of our Featured Females, Miss Sweetness Picks Herself Up and gets Serious with us. Fear not the Fransson, good people. She comes for a piece of your heart. Just a small piece. She might even give it back, with a little interest.

8.40 NIKO Niko is a Troubadour. Wade tells me that this guy is Swiss. Possibly. Anyway, Niko sings in French. His is a low voice, and (says Wade) the effect is really rather sexy. Niko’s album UNTOLD STORIES is on i tunes, and like a lot of the gang he is featured on the first two ISLAND EXPERIMENT albums. I’ll be looking out for the guy for the first time. Join me.

Hayley TUCKER. She'll write you a song, all right?
9.00 SIMEON WARBURTON The Funky Farmer...or is it some other guy in a hat and a beard... does some serious guitar picking. He may just nod his head in sympathetic appreciation of the ‘choons. Whatever. It’s the good stuff. It’s so stuffed with good, you will do more than nod your own head. You’ll be dancin’.

9.20 ANDY MITCHELL The return of the Yardbird vocalist...and Sir, it is indeed an honour to have you among us for this special night of mischief. Favour us with something old/new, borrowed and blue. We will be most sure to like it.

9.40 HAYLEY TUCKER The Princess of Wails captures our hearts...yet again. Fresh from what I believe will be another barnstorming gig at the
Troubadour West Brompton,
the Haylstress will be singing her hits off. Join in if you want to...and if you know the words. And if Hayley says you’re messing up the song, then you’d better keep quiet.

YES!!!!! It's the WADESKI!!!!!
10 sharp! WADE BAYLISS The Originator, Facilitator and Host of the Experiment. YES! It’s the Wadeski. In his comfy shoes and a reasonably clean shirt, ready to charm y’all out of your bad selves. You’ve checked out the video...put on your best heels, step out the front door and CHECK HIM OUT for real.

10.20 JOSEPH DEAN OSGOOD He cannot repair the wheels on his lovely white Merc, but (my friends!) this does not matter. Jo Dean Osgood is a STAR. He’s been to Ibiza for the video shoots...he is attracting a little bit of the right kind of support...He’ll get a cab to the gig, and then he’ll sock it right to ya. Do not miss it.

10.40 THE ALL-STAR EXPERIMENT featuring...... PATRICK LONG on bass instruments, WILLS MORGAN on the bucket and spoons, DJEMBE DAVE aka ‘THE DAVE’ on his drum, JAY GUN and lots and lots of very special guests!
Anything can happen...and it usually does...in the official end of the evening JAM thing. The vibe will most definitely be here. But will you be there to witness it?

Eleventh Hour GO! with DJ JAY GUN in the main bar. Drink, dance and doobie-doo. Because after the DO, you’ve just gotta do the DOOBIE-DOO.

After Show: It’s not planned and we don’t need to talk about it. Besides, there is little point in you turning up just for the after show. The Show is where it’s at, come see the Show, all right? It is not that complicated, friends.

WHAT ABOUT THE WORLD CUP? Now I am well aware that there is a football tournament being staged in a continent called Africa.

Apparently, there are a lot of folks who are somewhat keen to watch the antics of some reasonably fit males as they MUCK ABOUT in a boxed area.

Well I can promise you...our gig will have good music, nice lighting, lovely ladies, a boxed area, some reasonably fit blokes and quite a lot of mucking about. I’m not even talking about my good self here. And I’m not even that fit.

That’s it friends...that’s the pre-view. BE THERE or be somewhat square. And there’s no business like square business. Come with us. Come on. POP UP. You know you want to.
