Brent consultation on public libraries

A meeting is taking place today at the Brent Town Hall as part of the ongoing public consultation on the proposed closure of local public libraries. If you are a resident in Queens Park, Kensal Green or Kensal Rise you may want to join the debate.

According to the Brent Council website “The meeting is open to all and provides a chance to hear about the proposals and put questions to the Leader of Brent Council, Cllr. Ann John and Cllr. James Powney, Lead Member for Environment, Planning and Culture.

The public consultation on the proposal to close 6 of Brent's 12 libraries - and transform the remaining 6 into modern, multi-functional community 'hubs' - officially started on 29 November and runs through until 4 March 2011.

Residents can read about them in more detail and complete an online questionnaire by visiting www.brent.gov.uk/librarytransformation.”

The meeting is today, 6th January 2011 at 6.30pm at Brent Town Hall  Brent Town Hall. Another meeting will take place on Wednesday 12th January 2011 at 10.30-1pm and 2.30-5pm at Willesden Library.

The only chance of avoiding closure is to have local involvement and for people to become active citizens. Judging by the strength of this campaign so far, it is fair to say that the Library will remain central to the community... however this is not yet the case and your participation is paramount.

Concerned locals have set up a Save the Kensal Rise Library Facebook group that you can join here. They've also set up the website http://kensalriselibrary.wordpress.com/ . If you haven't joined them yet, do it now.
