The Kensal Town Fund (KTF) now entering it's 10 year of fundraising operations is about to help lauch a new venue in Harlesden this Friday 22nd. Hugh Nott writes.
Formerly known as the NW10 club or Dreams, it needed a revamp, and the KTF have been busy. Designers, decorators, and builders have been at work. Where previous attempts have met with failure, our equitable team hope to find new ground for success. Over the years we have had many Gigs, at both the Masons Arms, and the WilliamIV, whose previous owners, Patrick and Carlos were very generous to the Fund. To date we have raised over £27,000 for various charities, including: Shelter, WaterAid, The Macmillan Trust, The Norwegian Red Cross, to name but a few. With each Gig we have referred to the Forbes Trust list to see exactly how effective the Monies are getting to the people in need. Where Administration costs were over 40% we have not invested.
The ethos of the Kensal Town Fund has been to provide where possible money to Local People working in these sometimes harrowing and difficult jobs in foreign and all too near environments. This policy has meant that people can really see and discuss with real people where their money is going. (ie: Jono Vernon-Powell ~ living in Kensal Rise and working for New Life Mexico )
We hope you can make our gig this Friday 22 of March again for Shelter.
The Egg a well known local band are playing, with a few No1 hits in the dance charts, the Twins Ned and Maff, are a delight to the ears!, Their Grandmother was the founder of Shelter, so we hope to bring them maximum support!
Also playing is the wonderful Charlie Gardener, with his band Atomic Son, ( A new album coming out very soon). Joseph Dean Osgood brings his showmanship to the stage with his band the Trelicks, and The Graphic, a tight solid future punky band with energy not seen since early Clash or Undertones days!
After the LIve bands we kick off the Djs with Paul Johnston, playing out to VIP's in Ibiza, he has played for many sound systems including Sancho Panza! Dj Justin Rushmore, also a founding member of Sancho, started Vinyl Solution in Camden, and Finger-licking Records, now on Son of Man records will bring a great flavour to the night, and with a HUGE 11 K rig (turn it down) should be fun! Also there DJ GUYA (My brother the Acupuncturist!) who helped start the famous Full moon parties in Coh Pang Gan, will spin some funky Electro Swing and classic house. Squeezing in-between Bands DJ Piers Thompson, and late on James (LOVELY) Hunt, hope to impress!
Our warm up night Last Saturday was an excellent friendly showcase for the revamped space, that bodes well for a continuing good vibe and superb music! We hope the local residents come out and the Kensal crowd who always enjoy a good party will grace the dance floor!
