For flips sake, I am not Marion! What would be really interesting is if YOU walked down from Chepstow thru to Elgin and polled the shopkeepers about WT. But hey! We all know that's not going to happen. Why not, you are so sure of the results. Come and talk to us, we are all here right now. Local shops selling milk! What you can't be bothered walking one block down for your groceries. So you were barred from a Facebook page.......get over it, or is your record stuck too!

To prove your point , why don't YOU conduct a poll of local shop owners , and when you've got the results , post them on your facebook page ? You could even put a list in your shop window - the one that's only open 6 hours a week. The rest of the time it's all shuttered up - very appealing to visitors I must say! The only one who whines constantly about 'monstrosity mansions' , a window being out of place and greedy landlords is YOU. You can't even get your calculations correct .The rest of us are busy making money ( especially WT - he must be raking it in ! jealous , much ? ). So much for me 'getting a life' , ha , you're really pathetic. :zzz

Whatever you say , Marion. And I'm the multi alias hypocrite ? I don't like antique dealers from outside the area coming in and telling locals what to do with their area , maybe I should follow you lot back to Norfolk and tell you what to with your shopping streets ? , I am however very interested in the local shops of the area selling other things that are useful to the local people seven days a week. You know , real shops selling bread , newspapers , milk , groceries , books , butchers , etc etc not endless lanes of antique dealers selling to a very tiny percentage of visitors. Not local people wanting local shops. Simple as that. Try reading through the posts without your usual glimmered lack of vision. :D

Local shops do not support WT. Period. Go and ask every shop from Chepstow down to Elgin. Will do that? No. Why not? Could it be you will be told that we do not want spiralling rents and business rates (for they are linked), inevitable when you have a monopoly of ownership. Having read thru your multi-alias diatribes it's clear to me you do NOT like antique dealers and that you think what we sell is crap (post 58). Your agenda is transparent, your modus operandi (multi-alias posts at all hours) reveals a total absence of REAL support. Get a life.

One multi millionaire property developer against a band of scruffy morons waving placards , spouting hypocritical cliche ridden drivel and outright lies pontificating on a facebook page who ban and delete people who dare to post the truth about what the faceless admin and their cronies on the facebook page are REALLY up to.. ... All WT has to back him up is a vast wealth of experience , vast wealth , intelligence , common sense , vision , an army of lawyers and solicitors , several architects , surveyors and building inspectors , his staff and secretary and the goodwill of all the local shop owners and landlords who unlike you lot pay local taxes. Oh and the council , who must be utterly bored with all your antics by now. Yup - he doesn't stand a chance !

The Save the Portobello Road Market is a sham campaign! Marion Gettleson et al have mis-informed, falsified facts and manipulated the good will of the public; rallying support and used as ammunition against landlord Warren Todd. I'm unaware of the reasons why they are doing this and I shouldn't care. However, I'm repulsed by the campaign's deceitfulness and cannot take a passive stance. Anyone, including myself, who asks questions, is automatically blocked by admin. Social networking media such as Face Book makes all propaganda instantly flammable, and which command support and loyalty of its followers in many instances without questions. However, I’m glad that there are few who see through this masked campaign, albeit just a very few individuals! I have voiced my opinions to the HM Inspectorate regarding the Admiral Vernon appeal, written to Ivan Mcquisten (Antique Traders Gazette) and to Jonathan Prynn (Evening Standards). I urge anyone with similar views to do like wise.

OK , I ADMIT IT ! The Save the Portobello Road campaign is nothing more than a lie , a scam , a sham , a politically biased attempt at subverting the council and an increasingly desperate and ultimately futile attempt at stopping WT from being successful ( you know how much us Liberal Democrats despise that , unless it’s behind closed doors of course ) , changing the street from being open 6 hours on a Saturday to 7 days a week . That’s simply intolerable . Where are my human rights ? I have been violated !

You are basically using the inherent good will of the local people to do your dirty work for you - namely the attempted downfall of WT. ( for whatever reasons I simply cannot fathom ) Which is very negative and counterproductive as he's just about the only positive thing happening in the area at the moment. In the event he gives up on things , maybe he'll end up sick of all the negativity , who knows ? Then you'll really see the $£%@ hit the fan , big players like British Land could enter the fray and once they get started , nothing will stand in their way. Bulldozers ahoy ! You'd probably look back on now as the good old days in a few years time & WT as not that bad after all.. ...think on that !  :-*

As for the wealthy rummaging around PB on a Saturday morning - that is a ridiculous statement - the wealthy send for a brochure from Bonhams , Christies etc , flip through it and buy over the phone / net. The crap sold in PB cannot be compared to the works of art and fine antiques the wealthy adorn their properties with. As for your comment about they do not come for - I don’t care what they come for - I’m interested in the local people’s amenities , the local shops being successful and the local area thriving during the week . I couldn’t care less about the antique market as I’ve already stated , and you obviously don’t care about the local infrastructure by being closed all week. Maybe I’m being selfish and I have ulterior motives , just like you , but unlike you I readily admit it and don't hide behind a smokescreen.

Actually THREE shops in Westbourne Grove owned by the Jones’s that were formerly Antique shops/ arcades are now very successful alternatives and have been for years - Negozio Classico on the corner , Cool Cuts & The Tile shop. They are currently refurbishing the newsagents and when I enquired whether they would be turning it into stalls they laughed and said no. Which says it all. No clone shops there - independent shops doing what they do best - the same thing will happen with PB once a prestigious upmarket brand like Waitrose inevitably moves in. The mere idea that a highly prestigious brand like Waitrose could move into an area sends highly positive shockwaves around , try googling the local reaction to their arrival - it’s not like a tesco express you know. Having a Waitrose puts your area on the map !

Bobby Jones still has an arcade he closed his shops on Westbourne when he retired from dealing. He owns 109 Portobello which he lets to a map dealer. Do you want Portobello to be indistinguishable from any other area. Antiques contribute to the diversity of the market drawing people from across the globe. They do not come for All saints and Waitrose. People come for goods made in the golden age of British and European manufacturing 1800 -1940 Silver and plate of unrivalled quality all made in Sheffield, The largest collection of English antique boxes any where in the world, clocks, furniture, glass,b ronzes, vintage including Louis Vuitton trunks. I could go on and on but you would rather have shops full of goods available anywhere in the world made in Asia by children. People buying antiques tend to be wealthy they will take their money elsewhere if we turn into clonesville.

You're past your sell by date and the sooner you're all replaced with some useful shops open all week long the better.. Kingsland might have stood a chance for starters. It's reverting back to what it used to be - a mix of different shops - and for the better. Your antique stalls and shops only serve yourselves and a few tourists , they do nothing to help the local people whatsoever.
"How can increased trading days be bad for Portobello? Can't see the logic." It's not bad for the area , it would be a massively positive step- ask Kingsland & the other shops that are closing due to the 'closed shop mentality' - it's only bad for Marion Gettleson and her antique collecting pals. Who only want to open on a Saturday - for 6 hours when it suits them and sod everyone else.. They actually want to dictate the future of the area to suit themselves with no regard to the law abiding local tax payers who live here - it's truly outrageous !!!

A few random people ? Stall holders , landlords , arcade owners - not what I'd call 'a random selection' .. all sharing one common opinion , all censored for sharing that opinion.. do some research on the site and in the area. Say what you like about All Saints but it's got a lot more kudos than a few volvo driving twin set and pearl arcade dealers from Norfolk who only came up for the social gathering. The residents and landlords of the area owe them nothing at all. They have no loyalty to the area , a few bad Saturdays and they'll be off to another market with their tired old crap. WT has overheads to pay - business rates etc - ever heard of those ? In the real world landlords have to face things like that. Not that most of the regulars on that page know much about facing reality.

Truth seeker, The bailed out All Saints mega store does nothing for Portobello,it's an unimaginative solution for the corner site.Individual independent 'destination' shops would have been a far more sympathic solution if Lipkas could not be saved. All saints can be found anywhere and is not a raisIon d'etre for people to seek out Portobello. Naming a few random people who you claim agree with you does not validate your argument. Also how can you censor this comments page? You insults belittle nobody but yourself.

Also , while we're on the subject - I'm not the only one disagreeing with the fundamentally distorted objectives and hysterical censorship displayed at the site. Look at the list below me , Van Luu is actually a stall holder who works opposite Marion Gettleson , I think you'll find she agrees with some of my sentiments , she even posted so much on the fb page before it was all summarily deleted by admin for no sensible reason whatsoever. Many other posters have been blocked / deleted recently and oddly enough we all shared a common purpose - we all agreed that the facebook page was a sham and was using the good nature of the locals for an ulterior underhand motive, namely attempting to disrupt the business of Warren Todd. Ask Peter Dixon , owner of several arcades in the street if you don't believe me.

A. you're telling me the chaotic mish mash of Lipka's open just one day a week was better than a world famous mega chain open 7 days a week ? What a tiny mind you must have. B. Don't give me the kettle/pot/black crap- I've censored nobody , I'm more than capable of arguing my case rather than relying on the cheap tools of the intellectual inadequates festering in the pea brained dung heap that is the portobello antiques market facebook page. Unfortunately I hadn't bargained for cheap tactics like wholesale censorship and post deletion- if they can't argue their case - they just resort to the cowardly act - ban. Reminds me of Nazi Germany.

The 'save the portobello market ' page is nothing more than a thinly veiled attack on a legitimate businessman ( Mr Todd ) who has done nothing but good for the area. They call All Saints a monstrosity - which is ironic as it actually adheres to the original layout of the street when it was Archer St. They have no idea what they are talking about. I'd like to know what contribution to the area Ms. Gettleson hopes to achieve when her own shop is only open for 6 hours 10-4 on a Saturday? If she's so pro arcade why doesn't she turn her shop into one ? I have lost count at the number of people who have been censored by the faceless hypocrites who run the page. They pontificate about faceless posters trolling, while 'admin' continues stifling free speech by crass censorship . As for trolling they are more than guilty of that themselves with their never ending drivel.

I too agree with the above poster. The "Save the Portobello market" and their page is terribly confusing. I too joined and supported it originally but it would be more aptly named " "campaign for Portobello Antique Arcades to retain Saturday-only openings"" Portobello Market is a vibrant place and the independents definitely need support but Ms Gettleson's page and campaign is misleading and views alternate to her own are deleted and then blocked from the page. Presumably I too will be censored on that page as well now. It is a great shame as so many people care so deeply about the independent edge on the Bello and we need to ensure all voices and opinions are heard whether we agree with them or not. One cannot claim to be bullied when bullying and censoring others. By the way Source - you are a great mag thus far best of luck and loads of success going forward!

We all need to work together to make Portobello a welcoming and diverse and unique place to visit. Save the Portobello may not realise that their very name confuses people into believing that the Portobello is closed. Two Americans I spoke to recently thought Portobello had closed down, I reassured them that all was well. Lets get some good PR going now please. I am sure that some individuals are well meaning and want to do their best for all but lets not bite the hand that feeds us PLEASE. We need to work with Warren Todd and Lee Clifford who are very special people. They hold the power now as they are the main Landlords of the Portobello so let us all work with them and give them our support. It makes sense. Hilary Proctor
