A Live Jazz Band, West End Stars, Jerk Chicken and Zippos Circus… well, would you expect anything less from The Lexi Cinema in the Park, northwest London’s first ever large-scale screening extravaganza?
The Lexi in Kensal Rise brings open air cinema to northwest London, with three special screenings in two very special parks. Trought a partnership with outdoor cinema gurus The Screen on the Green (not to be confused with the Islington cinema of similar name) they are bringing us a series of purely magical events complete with all the theatrical quirkiness that The Lexi Cinema is fast becoming famous for. Live entertainment, specially decorated parks, costumed ushers, and classic cinema on a massive inflatable screen. So, gather up your mates, your family, your picnic, your blankets and wine, and join them this September..
The series premiere takes place at a magically transformed, award-winning Roundwood Park - in association with Brent Council - on Sunday 12 September with a hands-in-the-air, rosé-fuelled, Super Trouper screening of feel good modern classic, Mamma Mia!, as voted for by The Lexi’s local community in a specially-conducted online poll. The premiere screening will feature a live choir leading the singing, and we’ll be joined during the interval by the stars of the West End show for a special performance. Golden Sunset will also be there cooking up a storm in true Caribbean style serving jerk chicken, BBQ and veggie options on-site.
Part 2 sees the action switch to nearby Queens Park on Friday 17 September for a touch of golden era Hollywood style, courtesy of Casablanca complete with a live Jazz Band (Sam included), a troupe of jugglers and Spice Caravan serving up their delicious and healthy, authentic North and East African cooking.
For the finale screening it returns triumphantly to Roundwood Park on Saturday 18th September for a rousing, all-adventure climax in the shape of Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark, where the weird and wonderful performers of Zippos Circus will be walking amongst you. You’ll feel as though you’ve just stepped behind the scenes of this film classic as the exhilarating performers turn the Roundwood park into a real-life adventure movie set (just remember to look out for poisoned blowpipe darts). Golden Sunset (we’ll be praying for one) will also return with their delicious BBQ.
Founder-dreamer of The Lexi Cinema, Sally Wilton explains: “The Lexi’s mission is to bring the magic of cinema to the local community. The outdoor screenings in the park allow us to recreate the special experience of a visit to The Lexi on a much larger scale, whilst somehow still retaining the warm, welcoming intimacy of our beautiful little cinema. The usual Lexi touches, such as film introductions, great wine, live music and friendly, passionate local volunteers will all be there. For these shows, however, The Lexi’s incredible, overhead auditorium light installation will be replaced by sunset, moonlight and a blanket of stars!”
Together, The Lexi and The Screen on the Green have planned over 50 similar events across the rest of London and the Southeast this year, with plans to go way above and beyond that number in 2011. This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. To be continued…
