An event like no other! Today!
In the first of a new lecture series, FOKGC Guide and City of London Guide Lecturer Robert Stephenson explores a topic with a curious connection to the history of Kensal Green Cemetery. The proliferation of anatomy schools from the late 18th century onwards created a huge demand for bodies on which to practise dissection. Most corpses were supplied by individuals prepared to violate fresh graves for the considerable profits involved. The trade effectively came to an end with the passage of the Anatomy Act of 1832, which passed just eight days after the Act of Parliament that created Kensal Green, London's first garden cemetery, in July 1832. Lectures are free for Friends of Kensal Green Cemetery, with a suggesed donation of £5 on the door for others, including refreshments.
